RECEPTIONISTS |
Receptionists are important people at our Senior Center.
These are the folks who greet you as you enter. These are the voices you hear on the
telephone. These are the friendly folks who answer your questions, sign you up for
activities, help to solve your problems. If you like people, can work under pressure and
enjoy an ever-changing variety of situations, being a receptionist will be very rewarding. |

ADULT DAY CENTERS |
The Northshore and
Lake Washington Adult Day Centers offer a
health program for frail and disabled seniors. It offers gentle exercise, crafts,
entertainment, outings, games, hot lunches, individual attention and lots of tender loving
care. Volunteers are needed as staff aides and for general office work, cooks and kitchen
helpers, and to work one-on-one with these frail seniors. |
TELEPHONE COMMITTEE |
Among the most important functions at our Center are our
efficient telephone crews. Some of them make calls to tell members about upcoming events,
to remind us of appointments, to request baked goods for a special occasion, or for a
number of other needs. Sometimes calls are made from the Center or often it is more
convenient to make calls from home. |
DINING ROOM AND KITCHEN |
NSC serves hot lunches every weekday. Volunteers are
needed to be cook-helpers, set and clear tables, serve food, load the dishwasher, and to
help clean up afterward. |
COFFEE BAR |
Many members feel that our Coffee Bar is the most popular
room at our new Center. Volunteers help create a warm and friendly atmosphere as they
serve coffee and light refreshments. If you enjoy people, this is a great opportunity to
make friends. |
ANNUAL RAFFLE |
The most important fund-raising activity of the year is
our annual summer raffle. Raffle tickets are sold May through July or early August. It is
hoped that every member will sell raffle tickets to family and friends. In addition,
volunteers are needed to sell raffle tickets at banks and supermarkets, working a
four-hour shift two or three times during this time period. |
RANSACKED ATTIC RUMMAGE SALE |
Another major fundraiser is our annual "Ransacked
Attic" rummage sale. Volunteers are needed to help sort, price and sell items donated
for this sale. Drivers with vans or pickups also are needed to pick up rummage that is
offered to us. |
SOCIAL SERVICES |
Northshore Senior Center provides many services for
seniors including health checkups, foot care, employment counseling, "meals on
wheels", and a lot more. In addition to these programs, the Social Services group on
the upper floor needs receptionists, copy machine operators and multi-talented volunteers. |
OUTREACH PROGRAMS |
Some of our most worthwhile programs go beyond the Center
itself. SCHOOL FRIENDS help busy teachers with handicapped students and provide other
assistance at schools. PHONE FRIENDS talk with "latchkey" boys and girls who may
have problems or may be lonesome. CONNECTIONS visit home-bound elders, newly bereaved
members, newcomers to our area and others to whom friendly visits are helpful. NATURAL
HELPERS assist seniors who may have a variety of concerns. DRIVERS are needed to take
seniors who do not drive to medical or dental appointments, grocery shopping, etc. People
who KNIT or CROCHET are needed to make caps, socks, etc. for the needy. All the above need
volunteers. |
SUMMER GARDENING AND GAMES |
During the spring
and summer months assistance is needed to keep our landscaping neat
and attractive. If you like to prune, pull weeds or mow lawns, see
Mac MacBeth or phone him at 425-486-4564. We also need organizers and leaders
for a variety of summer games. We have or are planning facilities for lawn bowling,
horseshoes, shuffleboard, volleyball and other outdoor activities. |

COMPUTER LEARNING CENTERS FOR SENIORS |
Our Computer Learning
Centers at Bothell, Mill Creek and Kenmore (launched in 2001) offer introductory
and intermediate courses in database, word processing and spreadsheets, using
IBM-compatible computers. Instructors and assistants are needed who are knowledgeable
about computers and software applications. |
OFFICE STAFF |
Computer-literate volunteers are needed in the Center's
office to enter information and prepare reports on IBM-compatible computers. We use Word,
Excel and Access software. See Barbara Berry in the Administration Office. |
ROUSTABOUTS, SERVERS AND HANDY-FOLKS |
The Center has many needs for handy-people--those with
pickups or trucks or vans to help move things from one place to another, and people to
help set up and put away tables and chairs for special events. We call these our
"roustabouts". We need many kinds of volunteers who can be handy when
"handy-folks" are needed, to hang a picture or do minor repairs on furniture,
fixtures, etc. |
PANCAKE BREAKFASTS |
Our pancake breakfasts on the first and third Saturdays
of every month are very popular events. The Men's club also has a breakfast on the first
Wednesday of every month. Volunteers are needed to help cook, serve, clean up and wash
dishes at these events. You'll meet new people and have lots of fun on these occasions. |
GIFT SHOP |
Our Gift Shop sells craft items made by our members,
shirts printed with our own NSC legend, quality clothing donated by members and many
unique items. Volunteers are needed to arrange and sell merchandise, keep records, etc. |
MAILING COMMITTEE |
Once each quarter when the newsletter is printed a crew
is needed to prepare them for mailing. This is an easy task that only requires two or
three hours of time. Occasionally the mailers also are needed when general mailings are
sent to the membership. |
BAKED GOODS |
At various times during the year, pies, cakes and cookies
are needed for receptions, dinners and special events. Volunteers are needed who can be
called upon occasionally to prepare some of these baked goods. |
VINTAGE MAGAZINE |
VINTAGE Magazine, now over 10 years old, may be the first
and perhaps the only "literary" magazine published by a senior center. VINTAGE
now has a national reputation and publishes material from all over the country. Volunteers
are needed to help sell ads and copies of each semi-annual issue. And there always is room
for more writers, proofreaders and helpers. |
HOSTS AND HOSTESSES |
Almost every day people come to our Center who have never
been in the building before. Frequently groups from other Senior Centers schedule visits
to see our handsome new facility. Members of our Hospitality Committee take turns
escorting these newcomers through the building, usually working a few hours two or three
days a month. |
VOLUNTEER POOL |
Sometimes members want to volunteer but do not want to be
part of a continuing activity. We assign these people to our "Volunteer Pool"
and call them for our special and usually one-time projects. |
